And the winner is...

....organic food!

I've been performing a test for the past month to see if we spend more than the average Joe when it comes to food, concidering the fact that we buy about 94% organic food and the organic food is usually more expensive than conventional food.
I calculated that the average person spends about 1500:- SEK/month/person on food, buying non-organic food. Now, how much did we spend this month on food?? 2963:- (for 2 people!!!)

See, my point has been that if you buy wholesome organic food that contains more vitamines and minerals, you actually might make some money. Why? Eating organic food means you don't stuff you body with empty calories, additives etc etc. So in the end you end up eating less amounts of food, and you also save some money on doctors bills etc etc (I'm utterly convinced a big reason to why people in general are sick, is the quality of the food they're eating).

For example:

I make pancaces using organic wholegrain rye or speltflour (råg eller dinkel), organic butter and organic eggs.  The flour is about 200% more expensive than regular flour but contains way more nutrients than regular flour. The result?  We don't eat more than 2-3 pancaces each, then we get full. Usually, we eat about 8 pancaces each (if using regular flour), and then we end up feeling bloated afterwards. So, let's say the cost of one "regular" pancace is 2:-, the cost of my pancakes is 6:-/each. If we eat 8 regular pancakes we eat for 16:-/each. If eating 2-3 of my pancaces we eat for 12-16:-/each.

Well, I don't know about you. but I'd rather eat wholesome, organic, healthy food and spend the same amount (or even less) than I do on "regular" food, avoid doctors visits, stay healthy, vital, strong and energized!

I rest my case.....

Cheap shopping does NOT save you money!

So, I'm a bit amazed about this whole food-craze that's going on. I think I've said it before, but my philosophy is: Cheap shopping does NOT save you money!
For instance: If you buy and eat an organic orange, that specific orange contains plenty more vitamines and minerals than a conventinally grown orange (studies have shown for example that organic fruit contains 40% more antioxidants than convetionally grown fruits). So by eating this organic orange you're faster fulfilling your bodys needs. This resluts in you having less cravings/feeling less hungry and therefore will eat less hence cutting down on the calories.
When I choose what to eat, I NEVER count calories, I go by the nutritional value of the food.

So, 40% more antioxidants in one organic orange means that you have to eat 1,5 conventionally grown orange to reach the same amount. Not to mention all the pesticides that comes with conventionally grown fruits etc etc....  Studies has also shown that milk coming from cows that has been raised/fed organically contained 90% more antioxidants than "regular" milk. This means that in order to get the same amount of antioxidants in one glass of organic milk you have to drink about two glasses of organic milk. And btw, organic milkis NOT twice as expensive as regular! So by eating organic food you (among other things):
  • Faster fulfill your bodys needs for vitamines and minerals, therefore eat less (for those counting calories) = you SAVE MONEY OR spend about the same amount as you already do shopping convetionally grown food.
  • Avoid pesticides and unnecessary additives that in the end will make you sick in one way or the other, resulting in you having to pay for medicines, doctors visits etc etc = you SAVE MONEY (but hey, here in Sweden we have something called "Högkostnadskort" which means that after paying a certain amount to health care, you'r health care/medecines are FREE, what a great way to make people continue to eat crap!)
  • You stay healthier, feel more vital, have more energy!

So why not eat organic food? I know a bunch of people that shop at low-price food chains, thinking they're saving money. But in return, their health is deteriorating, the are constantly craving food/sweets etc (hence their bodies need more nutrition), they're overeating, often feeling tired/sluggish, popping pills etc etc.
I'm not saying I never get sick, but I rarely do. And I'm convinced that a big reason for that is because we make sure to buy/eat as much organic food as we possibly can (some things are WAY overpriced though, hopefully that'll change soon....), whole grains, fresh fruits/veggies and not a lot of semi-manufactured food. And believe it or not we're not spending more than other people do each month on food!
